Frequently Asked Questions

Why did you choose the name La Sirenita?

La Sirenita is the little hippy sister to the elegant hacienda vacation rental Casa Sirena across the street. La Sirenita is the perfect annex for larger groups at Casa Sirena and for quick trips and extended stays. Contact us for more information about renting both properties.

Are children allowed?

Kind Of. We have no small children policy. During low and mid season, we are happy to welcome families with children. Our hotel can be unsafe for small children – we have a rooftop with no railing, lots of stairs, lots of concrete, a small dipping pool in the courtyard, etc… If your child is 8+, understands our concerns, follows safety precautions and respects the needs of our other guests, – we would love to have them stay – with you – in your room. If not, we appreciate if you respect our adults-only policy. Oh, and if they can’t behave, we will happily ask you to leave for the comfort of our other guests.

Is there Wi-Fi?

Yes there is, and it works great! We have installed Starlink, and you will get WIFI in your room and throughout the property. Hey- please remember we’re on an island in Mexico, things can happen!

(Hey! Follow us and Like us while you’re at it!)

Why do you need my arrival information?

We have set up self-check in at La Sirenita and want to be available in case you need assistance. Juan, our property manager is available to meet you at the ferry and give you a tour of the property. We will send you an email with instructions with Juans WHATSAPP number so you can keep in touch.

Can I check-in on a Sunday?

Yes, we are happy to have you as a guest any day of the week! Our property manager may not be able to meet you at the ferry, but we will provide detailed instructions on how to access the property.

Are there other days I cannot check in?

La Sirenita is set up for self check-in. If you would like to check-in on Christmas or New Years Day, please know that our Property Manager Juan will not be available to meet you at the ferry. We will be available for you if there is a problem, just give us a call.

Is management on-site 24 hours a day?

No. Our Property Manager lives on the island and is available if you something should arise. If needed, he can come to the hotel for emergencies and may be reached by cell.

Is there a minimum stay?

Yes. We have a two-night minimum year-round. One-night stays may be available by request, so please contact us directly to inquire.

Do you allow smoking?

La Sirenita adheres to Mexico’s anti-smoking laws. Smoking is prohibited in our rooms. Please note, if you choose to smoke inside our rooms, you are choosing to be charged a $250 cleaning fee.

Can I flush toilet paper at the hotel?

No. You may not flush any toilet paper or feminine products in any toilets on Isla Mujeres.

The plumbing is an antiquated system and if there is a clog, large portions of the property must be excavated.

Garbage cans are provided in your room and are emptied and cleaned daily.

We have installed bidets in each room for your comfort.

Will there be housekeeping?

Yes, our awesome staff tidies up your room daily excluding Sundays.

Bedsheets are changed every three days and towels as you like.

They are like ninjas and wait until you leave for the beach to clean so no worries about 7am knocks on the door. Chances are you won’t even see them but you’ll know they were there when you return to a sweet-smelling, tidy room with cute bath towel animal shapes on the bed.

PS – In Mexico, it’s customary to leave a tip for your housekeepers at the end of your stay.

Do I have to speak Spanish?

Le ayudaría, pero no es obligatorio.

Most of the restaurants and commonly tourist-frequented businesses here employ people who speak enough English to get you what you need.

Is there a place to store my valuables?

Yes. All the rooms have wall-mounted safes, where you can fit the basics: passport, cash, iPad.

What is the proper tipping etiquette?

Housekeepers, maleteros (luggage handlers at the ferry) and waitstaff on the island all rely on tips. A good idea is a minimum of 100 pesos per day ($5) for your housekeepers, 120 pesos ($7) for your luggage handler and a minimum of 10-15% at all bars, beach clubs and restaurants, more if it is higher end.

What is the age requirement to stay?

All guests must be at least 23 years old to reserve a room.

Does my room have a kitchen?

Yes, Kitchenettes. All of our rooms have small kitchenettes. There is a coffeemaker, fridge, microwave, toaster, induction cooktop, pots and pans utensils, glasses, plates and bowls.

Basically there is enough to whip up an easy meal and cocktails.

What do I need to pack?

We provide all your linens, including two beach towels, soap and shampoo. The rest is up to you. Remember to bring your passport, sunscreen, a bathing suit, sunglasses, toiletries and enough garments to get you through half of your stay. You can get your laundry done at any of the laundromats on Isla Mujeres for about $1.50 a pound. It comes back to you dried and folded in a plastic bag, and it smells wonderful.

Do I need to bring cash?

You can exchange your cash for Mexican pesos at the bank. There are also two ATM machines within 5 minutes walking distance from La Sirenita. There is also Western Union for up to $500 a day. We prefer the ATMs but it’s personal preference. Remember to let your banks know you will be out of the country before you leave your home.

Do I need to rent a car on the island?

Not really. Once you arrive on the island you won’t need a car. If you want to leave the downtown area, you have the choice of a few modes of transportation: taxi, golf cart or bus. The first option varies from US$5.00 to US$20 in cost, depending where you want to go. Golf carts cost between US$75- $160 a day and provide the most flexibility and fun. There is also a local bus, hop on and hop for $20pesos!

Why do I have to pay for my entire stay upfront?

Unlike large hotels that can handle last minute cancellations, we are a small business of only five rooms. Our survival depends on your arrival. We appreciate your trust in us. We also have a pretty strict cancelation policy for the same reason. Please read the Hotel Policy over carefully before booking.

How much is required to book my stay?

A 50% deposit is required at the time of booking. The remaining balance is automatically charged 30 days before arrival.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept credit card payments only through our secure online reservation system, processed via Stripe.

Will taxes be added to my reservation?

Yes. A 21% Mexican room tax and local city tax are added to all reservations, as required by local law.

Are rates per person or per room?

Rates are per room and based on double occupancy. There are no discounts for single occupancy.

Can I add extra guests to a room?

Rooms 1, 2, and 4 have 2 beds and can accommodate up to 4 guests. An additional fee of $15 USD per person, per night applies.

What time is check-in and check-out?

Check-out is at 11:00 a.m.

Can I check in early or check out late?
